Scanning from inside and outside SmartScore

Last updated: 07/30/2024

Using SmartScore’s scanning interface has many advantages over scanning with the software that came with your scanner.

Should your scanner fail to respond to SmartScore’s "Scan" command, even with the latest driver installed, you can always use the scanning software that came with your scanner. Refer to settings belowShould your scanner fail to respond to SmartScore’s "Scan" command, even with the latest driver installed, you can easily switch to using Apple’s Image Capture app. See Using Image Capture settings below.

How it works …

A) Using SmartScore’s own scanning interface …

1
Position your first page properly into your scanner. (See Scanning Tips)
2
Click on the Scan button in the Input/Output tab or select ☰ FILE > Scan Music > Acquire.

Main features in SmartScore’s own scanning interface

Once previewed, use your cursor to drag a box around the image of the music leaving about 1/4“ of white on all sides.
Uncheck Auto-Resolution if you wish to set DPI manually.
Click on Final Scan to begin scanning the first page.
If you wish to review the scan again, push Preview.

B) Using Apple’s Image Capture application

1
Position your first page properly into your scanner. (See Getting ready to scan)
2
Go to ☰ FILE > Scan Music > Choose Interface > Apple Image Capture.
3
Click on the Scan button in the Input/Output tab or select ☰ FILE > Scan Music > Acquire.
4
Once opened, select the following settings in Apple’s Image Capture application:

Scan mode: Flatbed
Kind: Black and White (It’s really grayscale)
Resolution: 300 to 400 dpi (Higher resolutions DOES NOT necessarily equate to higher accuracy. Full orchestral and miniature scores may need to be scanned in at 400-600 dpi.
Format: PDF (This setting will allow you to scan multiple pages and save to PDF. See Loading and recognizing PDF files)
Combine into single document = ON: Scan in grayscale (not color).
Image Correction: None

B) Using your scanner’s native scanning software

If you have problems scanning from SmartScore, the first thing to do is download and install the latest driver for your scanner model and computer operating system from your scanner/printer’s website. Drivers are normally found under the "Support" or by typing in your scanner model and the word "driver" in Google Search.

Should your scanner fail to respond to SmartScore’s "Scan" command after installing and rebooting, you will need to scan outside of SmartScore using your scanner’s native scanning software. Apply the following settings when scanning outside of SmartScore:

Type/Depth: Greyscale (never "color", "black and white" or "half-tone")
Resolution: 300 dpi (nominal) 400-600 (miniature scores)
File Format/Save to: PDF (combine to a single file)
