Scanners and SmartScore

At Musitek, we no longer bundle scanners with our software. However, SmartScore X2 works perfectly well with any modern scanner.

By pushing the "Scan" button, an attempt will be made to connect to your scanner using the "TWAIN" protocol. If your scanner or operating system does not support TWAIN, nothing will happen. In that case, you should simply use the scanning software that came with your scanner. Scan between 300 & 400 dpi, greyscale and save multiple pages as a PDF file. In SmartScore, select "Begin recognition" to process your saved PDF file.

Scanning in Macintosh
Since Snow Leopard, Apple has removed the only universal scanning protocol, TWAIN. Apple wants folks to use their imbedded scanning app, “Image Capture”. Unfortunately, Image Capture at the moment is rather poorly implemented. Here are the Mac workarounds:

Option 1: Scan from SmartScore
Go to: FILE > Scan music > Choose interface > You scanner’s

Option 2: Launch the scanning software that came with your scanner.
In your scanner’s software, follow these guidelines:
You will want to save your scanned music as PDF
Set the resolution between 300 and 400 dpi
Make sure you are scanning in Grayscale (or “Document” mode) and NOT color
Save the final PDF file to your desktop or some other location you use for music scanning
In SmartScore, push the “Recognition” button (the icon is a page with a red arrow pointing downwards). Browse to the location where you saved the PDF file.
Follow the prompts from there. Everything will work normally.

Scanning in Windows
Use WIA driver for your scanner
Open SmartScore then close the Task Window that automatically opens up.
Go to File > Scan music > Select scanner
Find the driver belong to your scanner that begins with “WIAxxxxxx” then click on it and push OK.
Push the “Scan” button. Your scanner should begin to operate by creating a preview scan.
After scanning is completed, give the scanned file a name.
Once saved, push the “Recognition” button (the icon is a page with a red arrow pointing downwards).
Follow the prompts from there.
